About

The Stellenbosch office of the CSIR continuously monitors real time ocean waves and weather at various sites around the South African coast on behalf of Transnet.

Most of the data is gathered by means of moored wave buoys. The measured data is transmitted to a shore station where a comprehensive analysis is done. The analysed data is then downloaded in near real-time to Stellenbosch, where it is stored in a database.

In order to facilitate the need for waves information where it is unsafe to deploy wave buoys, the CSIR has implemented a 'Virtual Buoy System', whereby the wave parameters are computed with the use of a numerical model.

The online waves and weather data is updated hourly, on the hour.
