Ocean waves are monitored continuously at Durban in South Africa. Detailed
information is directly available in real-time, for operational purposes, to
TNPA (Durban) and the eThekwini Municipality.
There are two directional Datawell Waverider buoys
presently operational off Durban. The CSIR Waverider is located in 30 m water
depth off the Bluff, about 1.7 km from the shore. The eThekwini Waverider is
located off the mouth of the Umgeni River in 15 m water depth, about 1.5 km from
the shore. The CSIR Waverider (Mk 4) also measures currents at a depth of 1 m below the
surface. Measurements are processed on board, and transmitted to a shore
station every half hour. The analysed data is then downloaded in near real-time
to the Stellenbosch
office of the CSIR, where it is
stored in a database.
